Teaching Statement

Holding my conga

My purposes as a music educator are to help students cultivate their musical identity, to facilitate critical thinking, to foster creativity, and to encourage self-expression. I believe music education is not simply about teaching students’ music, it is about teaching them life (Edgar, 2014). Furthermore, I foster caring relationships with all my students. This encourages them to apply the ethics of care to other relationships in their lives in the present moment and in the future. As a result, my students and I have a positive effect on the wellbeing of the community and the world.
